Abstract

Class 120(2) [Also in Group XVI] In a yarn winding mechanism, means for controlling the tension of yarn comprises one or more friction discs driven from the roller, over which the yarn passes immediately preceding winding, at a peripheral speed exceeding that of the roller, the friction disc or discs driving the mandrel by frictional engagement therewith, and means for varying the pressure between the winding mandrel and friction disc or discs. As shown, as applied to web-winding mechanism, rollers 11, Fig. 2, feed web material towards a winding mandrel 14 supported by bearings 15 on arms 22 the inclination of which may be varied by a screw 23. A chain 13, driven by one of the rollers 11, drives discs 12 consisting or covered with friction material, engaging the winding mandrel 14. The discs are preferably driven at a peripheral speed at least 25 per cent greater than that of the mandrel at the points of contact therewith. Levers 16 are pressed against the winding mandrel 14 by air cylinders 17 controlled by a pressure regulating valve 18, such that the slip between the discs and mandrel may be adjusted. As the diameter of a roll being wound on the mandrel increases so the pressure between the mandrel and discs 12 increases, since the component of weight acting towards the discs increases. Web tension can be controlled by varying the pressure in the cylinders 17 and also by adjustment of the inclination of arms 22. In a modification, the air pressure is controlled automatically by a valve 24, Fig. 3. The valve 24 has a variable orifice 25 the opening of which is controlled by an arm 26 rocked as a result of the increasing diameter of a roll being wound. A manually controlled valve 29 is arranged in the supply to cylinder 17. The initial web tension is controlled by varying the setting of valve 29 and a bleed valve 31 when the valve 24 is closed. As the roll diameter increases arm 26 is swung about its pivot and the valve 24 is progressively opened, thereby varying the pressure supplied to the cylinders 17. Thus, the torque applied to the mandrel 14 is varied to preserve constant web tension. Specification 694,047 [Group XVI] is referred to.
