463,004. Winding fabrics &c. BARKER, J. E. Jan. 9, 1936, No. 739. [Class 42 (ii)] [Also in Groups IX and XVI] In means for automatically controlling the rotational speed of mechanism for winding paper, cloth, carpet, thread, wire, or similar material, a movable element or feeler, e.g. a roller riding in contact with the surface of the winding of the material is rigidly associated with and controls the angular movement of a wheel forming the primary of a chain-andsprocket gear train through which the radial movement of the feeler due to the increasing or decreasing overall diameter of the winding is transmitted to the operating screw of a variable speed transmission device of the expanding coned pulley type, e.g. as described in Specification 383,710, [Class XXIV], by which the rotational speed of the winding is controlled. The roller 1 rides on the outer surface of the coil 2 of material being wound on beam 3. It is mounted on the arm 4 secured to the shaft 5 of wheel 6, to the periphery of which is secured by a clip 9 the end of chain 8 which drives sprocket 10 on shaft 11 which also carries a wheel 12 to the periphery of which the end of chain 14 is secured by clip 13. Chain 14 drives sprocket 15 on the stub shaft 15a on which is a gear-wheel 16 driving pinion 17 on the same shaft as a larger gear 18 driving pinion 19 on the same shaft as gear 20 driving pinion 21 on the operating screw 21a of the variable speed transmission mechanism 22. This comprises parallel driving and driven shafts 22a and 22b fitted with slidable coned discs forming expanding pulleys 22c connected by belt 22d. Pinion 15 is axially slidable on its shaft 15a and carries a clutch element 15b adapted to engage a clutch element 15c integral with gear 16. The clutch elements are urged together by a spring 15d, and may be separated to disconnect the control of the variable speed mechanism. By changing gears in the train, the apparatus may be modified to suit materials of differing thickness and for very thin materials, e.g. paper, a worm gearing may be interposed in the train.
