551,126. Testing synthetic-resin-coated bands. CRADICK, M. J., and METROPOLITANVICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Aug. 11, 1941, No. 10194. [Class 106 (ii)] Comprises apparatus for testing the greenness " of synthetic-resin-coated paper or backing material in band or sheet form wherein a specimen band is wound on itself for more than a complete turn under tension, is subjected for a predetermined time to the temperature at which the resin can be cured, and wherein the extent of unwinding under the tension or the time for such unwinding is a measure of the " greenness." One end of the band 10 is passed through a slot 11 in a drum 1 and clamped by means operated by the knob 12. The band is attached at the other end to a weight 13 and wound around the drum with the paper next thereto by turning the handle 5 which drives through a belt or chain 3. A similar belt or chain 6 connects the handle shaft to the shaft of a motor 8. The drum is heated electrically by spaced heaters inside supplied by current through slip rings. The apparatus is enclosed in a housing with controls for temperature and/or the speed of the motor. The motor drives the pulley 7 through reduction gear and a freewheel clutch. In testing, the band is wound on to the drum to the required extent and the handle 5 released. The weight falls under control of the motor drive and will continue until the coating portion about to leave the drum is solid when the drum is arrested.
