Abstract

627,111. Rope grips. TARBUCK, A. K. April 14, 1947, No. 9839. [Classes 78 (ii) and 78 (v)] A guide for a rope or like flexible element including a first open part through whicl the rope is threaded and which is adapted to offer small fric tional resistance to the move ment of the rope therethrough a second open part adapted tc offer increased frictional resistance to the movement of the rope therethrough and means which, when a predetermined tension in the rope is exceeded, permits the rope to pass from the first part to the second part of the guide whereby the increased frictional resistance offered by the second part, enables a heavy load on the rope on one side of the guide to be retained by a relatively small tension in the rope on the other side of the guide. The guide has two arms 11, 12 secured to the half pulley 13, the two arms support pivoted links 18, 19 which divide the guide into two parts, the links being joined by a frangible pin 22. The arm 11 has a pivoted part 14 provided with a spring plunger 16, 17 which springs inwardly to allow entry of the rope. In use the rope is threaded through and is retained in the upper part of the guide until increased tension causes the pin 22 to be broken and the rope passes down to the half pulley 13 which brakes its motion. In a modification the pivoted links are dispensed with.
