Abstract

610,936. Treadle-propelled cycles. KRUSE, M. April 11, 1946, No. 11212. [Classes 136 (i) and 136 (ii)] In cycle-driving mechanism comprising a tension member passing around two spaced coaxial driving pulleys mounted on a driven wheel and connected thereto by one-way clutches, a pair of treadles connected one to each end of the tension member to move it alternately in opposite directions, and a guide pulley around which passes a bight formed in the tension member between the two pulleys, the tension member 27 is adjustably connected to the treadles 16, so that the distances between the points of connection of the tension member to the treadles may be simultaneously varied in the same direction. A twist grip 31 is mounted on a handle-bar 32 and controls the movement of slide members 21 to which the tension member 27 is attached. Two cables 34 extend from the twist grip 31 into the interior of the bottom bracket 15 on which the treadles 16 are mounted and into a hollow arm 18 of one of the treadles. One cable 34 is directly connected to the slide member 21 on one arm 18, and the other passes over a pulley 41 at the outer end of the other arm 18 and is then connected to the slide member. A further cable 42 extends from the second slide through the bottom bracket 15 over a pulley 41 at the end of the first arm and is then connected to the first slide. Tension springs 44 are arranged in the cables 34. The tension member 27 is connected at its ends to rocking members 61 pivotally mounted on the slide members 21. When the angle between the treadle and the tension member is small the rocking members are urged against the sides of the treadles and prevent the slide member from sliding on the treadle due to the load on the tension member. A stand is provided comprising a pair of downwardly diverging struts 74 passing through guides 77 and connected at their upper ends to an arm 76 angularly movable in a vertical plane so that downward movement of the arm moves the lower ends of the struts downwardly. The tension member 27 passes over drums 22 and drives the rear wheel through one-way clutches. Means are provided to disengage the one-way clutches to permit backward rotation of the driven wheel axle.
