Mechanical toys.- A mechanical toy, in which a driving-pulley, adapted to travel along an inclined cord, is provided with cranks by which parts of the toy are moved, has a counterweight suspended directly from the axle of the pulley and one or more links, forming no part of any movable member of the toy, connecting the cranks with the movable member. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the counterweight D<2> is suspended by wires D<1> from the axle of the pulley A which runs on a cord B. The body H of the toy is formed of two thicknesses of sheet material secured to an extension D of the wires D<1> and arranged in either side of the pulley, so that the latter is partly concealed. Links G<1> connect cranks C, formed on the axle of the pulley, to the limbs H<2> of the figure so that as the toy moves, the animal appears to be running along the cord. The body may represent a butterfly, the links being connected to the wing. In a modification, the body may be suspended below the cord the counterweight being dispensed with. As shown in Fig. 4, a figure representing an acrobat is suspended by the arms J from the axle of the pulley, and the links G<3> are connected to a crank K<1> formed in the wire by which the body is pivoted to the arms. Thus as the toy runs along the cord the body swings and the legs which are pivoted to the trunk also swing. To steady the toy and to prevent the pulley from leaving the cord, a cross arm J<1> attached to the arms J is provided with eyelets J<2> through which the cord is passed. Alternatively, the toy may be provided with guide pulleys A<1>, Fig. 5, disposed above the pulley A in either side of and in line therewith, the cord B being led over the driving pulley and under the guide pulleys. According to the Provisional Specification, the toy may be operated by holding an end of the cord in each hand and moving the hands up and down oppositely and alternatively. Thus a toy representing a butterfly, say, is made to appear to hover.
