609,049. Aircraft arrester gear. DARLING, G. F. March 4, 1946, Nos. 6738 and 10589. [Class 4] [Also Groups XXX and XXXIV] In a spring controlled disc brake device for bringing a moving body' to rest, the body is connected to rope 4 which is wound on drum 3, threaded on screw' 9 so that as the rope is pulled out the drum moves along the screw against clutch plate 5 which is resiliently held by springs 6, which may be double. The friction increases till the rope stops paying out, the drum being held by the plate. A key may be fitted to bush 11 to re-wind the rope. It is used for safety belts, e.g. for linesmen, and may also be used in a pair for bringing landing aircraft to rest, each drum being mounted swivelly at the side of the runway and the two ropes being joined by a cable length so as to engage the aircraft as it lands.
