Abstract

892,126. Variable-speed gearing. POENSGEN G.m.b.H. GEB. Jan. 13, 1959, No. 1273/59. Addition to 820,501. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XVI] An improvement in the winding apparatus as claimed in parent Specification, comprises a friction wheel mounted with its periphery in adjustable driving engagement with its respective driven member. As shown, a roller 13 engages web material being unwound from a roll 1 and rewound on a roll 2 or vice versa. The roller 13 is carried by a lever 132 loaded by a piston 133 in a cylinder 136 supplied with hydraulic liquid by a pump 138 through a control valve 135. The positions of friction wheels 7, 7<SP>1</SP> along drive shafts 107, 108 are varied by crank arms 140, 141 having pins 35, 36 which engage slots in arms 114, 115 respectively slidably engaging bars 116, 117. The wheels 7, 7<SP>1</SP> engage cones 3, 4 which drive shafts 103, 104 through gears 52, 53 and couplings 54, 55. The crank arms 140, 141 are rocked in response to variations in web tension or length of web between the rolls 1 and 2 as detected by the roller 13, thereby varying the positions of the wheels 7, 7<SP>1</SP> to vary the speeds of the shafts 103, 104 driving the rolls 1 and 2. The crank arms are rocked by pistons 118, 119, slidable in cylinders 120, 121 connected to a control valve 124 having a plunger 130 actuated by the lever 132 carrying the roller 13, the valve 124 being supplied with hydraulic fluid by a pump 129. The shafts 107, 108 are driven by a belt 111 from variable speed pulley 112. In a modification, wheels 7, 7<SP>1</SP> engage flat discs 3, 4 (Fig. 4, not shown), the position of the wheels being varied by crank-pins 35, 36 controlled hydraulically by servo mechanism to maintain constant linear speed and tension of the web being wound.
