[Also in Division B6] An arrangement for maintaing constant the linear speed of a web being wound on to or unwound from a roll of material comprises an hydraulic regulator for controlling the speed of the roller shaft in accordance with the number of revolutions made by the shaft from the initiation of the winding or unwinding operation. As shown in Fig. 1 the roller shaft 106 is driven by a motor 101 through chain gearing 103 and the transmission includes a continuously-variable gear unit 1, the control lever 17 of which is operated by a piston 14 in a cylinder 12 fed continuously with the liquid delivered by a positive displacement pump 7 driven by the output shaft 3 through a chain 5, the movement of the control piston thus being proportional to the total revolutions made by the pump. The delivery rate of the latter is controlled by a hand wheel 8 in accordance with the web thickness. In a second arrangement, Fig. 2 (not shown), the control piston operates through a lever bearing against a cam surface on the control lever 17. As shown in Fig. 3 the control piston 29 may also operate through an adjustable spring linkage 30 . . . 34 to vary the engaging force of clutches 36 on the winding shaft to maintain a constant web tension.
