Abstract

956,961. Feeding webs. J. E. MORRIS, R. E. M. GEMMELL, and MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. May 27, 1960 [May 29, 1959], No. 18367/59. Heading B6B. Constant tension is maintained in a web 13 fed to a cigarette-making machine and unwound from a reel 12 by variation of the speed of driving the reel in the unwinding direction. Web on the reel 12 is engaged by a roller 39 driven by pulleys 36, 38 and belt 51 through a shaft 34. The shaft 34 is driven through pulleys 33, 31 and belt 32 by a shaft 22. The shaft 22 is driven by a variable speed gear comprising discs 19, 21 and a co-operating friction wheel 23 carried by a rod 27, Fig. 3 (not shown), axially slidable by a bell-crank lever 48, Fig. 3, rocked by an arm 41 carrying a roller 16, Fig. 1, urged into contact with the web 13 by a spring 44, such that variations in web tension causes adjustment of the speed ratio of the variable speed gear to compensate for such variations.
