684,234. Feeding webs; rollers, collapsable. SARGROVE ELECTRONICS, Ltd., SARGROVE, J. A., BLAISE, R. E., BUXTON, D. H., and PILLINER, B. J. Aug. 16, 1950 [May 16, 1949], No. 12994/49. Class 100 (i). [Also in Group XXXV] In a system for automatically controlling the feed of web material, the effective diameter of a feed roller is variable in accordance with the size of a loop in the web. In a web feeding device wherein the extent of a loop 10, Fig. 1, in the web fed to the machine 12 is maintained substantially constant, the size of the loop is detected by photo-electric apparatus 13, 14 which operates an associated amplifier 15 to control the effective diameter of a feed roll 16. As shown in Fig. 2 one form of feed roll comprises a pair of coned supports 20, 21 mounted on a shaft 23 and supporting a series of supports 24 for a cylindrical surface 25 of rubber or like material. A flanged ring 26 operated by an electromagnet, or hydraulic or pneumatic means under the control of amplifier 15 causes the supports 24 to move along the coned supports 20, 21 and thus vary the diameter of the roll. In a modification which provides only for two diameters of roll the coned surfaces may face in opposite directions and variation of the roll diameter be effected from within the roll by an electromagnet or a Bowden cable. In a further modification, the coned surfaces may be dispensed with and the members 24 operated by inflatable envelopes disposed within the roll. In another arrangement, a series of resilient members forming the roll are compressed axially to expand them diametrically.
