816,859. Feeding webs. TIMSON, E. A. July 10, 1956 [July 20, 1955], No. 20997/55. Class 100(1) Means for tensioning a travelling web of relatively thin and flimsy flexible material, such as a film or metallic foil, comprises two web-supporting members spaced apart along the path of travel of the web, and means for creating a blast of air at superatmospheric pressure upon the portion of the web extending between said members on the side of the web other than that in contact with the members, the said means including a number of nozzles or jets spaced apart along the path of travel of the web between the said members and adapted to direct streams or jets of air at an angle, e.g. normal, to the surface of the said side. As shown, a travelling web W, e,g. of polythene, is drawn from a supply reel 1, guided around rollers 2, 3, fed through a printing station PS and then drawn over two supporting rollers 4, 5 spaced apart. At a point between these rollers, the upper side of the web is subjected to jets of air J discharged from slots 15 in the plate 14 of a blower mouthpiece 6, whereby the portion W<1> of the web is bowed downwardly and tension is created in the portion of the web between the reel 1 and the blast. From the roller 5 the web is guided over rollers 7, 8 to a re-reeling station 9. The blower mouthpiece 6 communicates with a fan casing 10 housing a blower 11 driven through a belt 13 by a motor 12.
