Abstract

935,862. Feeding webs. WITTON-JAMES Ltd. July 4, 1962 [July 20, 1961], No. 26349/61. Class 100 (1). In web-splicing apparatus in which a replacement reel 7 supported in a three-arm reel stand 1 is brought up to the speed of the running web 6, the dabbing brushes previously employed for splicing are replaced by means 14 provided with jets 17 through which air can be directed to impinge on the running web 6 to cause it to move into contact with the periphery of the replacement reel 7. The splicing means 14, biased against the running web by a spring 33, together with knives 15 for severing the running web 6 from the expired running reel are carried by two parallel arms 11 pivoted at 10. A guide bar 13 and the splicing means 14 presses against the running web 6 to stop it fluttering immediately before the splicing action. The surface 16 of the splicing means 14 is provided with grooves or slots 19 to accommodate tensioning belts (not illustrated). The jets 17 disposed in holes 18 are distributed over the entire length of the guide surface 16 and direct air normally or slightly upwardly to compensate for any drag which the air may produce on the running web. The jets 17 on either side of the slots 19 are angled to direct the air to points on the running web which are normally engaged by the tensioning belts. In operation, air is supplied as soon as the leading end of the replacement web, previously prepared with adhesive strip, has passed the splicing means, so that splicing takes place at the next revolution of the reel 7. The air pressure is controlled so that it is related to the tension of the running web.
