Abstract

1,155,874. Feeding webs. SWISS ALUMINIUM Ltd. 29 Sept., 1966 [29 Sept., 1965; 1 Oct., 1965], No. 43530/66. Heading B8K. [Also in Division F2] To maintain the tension constant in a web being fed by rollers 1 from a supply reel 2, the shaft of the reel is coupled to an induction or eddy current brake 3 the pole wheel of which is driven by a motor 5 at a constant speed in a reverse direction to the movement of the brake armature and reel shaft during unwinding, and the current in the coil 4 of the brake is controlled so that the braking effect is adjusted in such manner that the web tension remains substantially constant. The coil 4 is connected via an amplifier 6 to a potentiometer 9 which controls the voltage applied to the coil. Connected to the potentiometer are resistances 10, 11 in series with a tachometer 12 and a D.C. voltage source 13. The tachometer 12 is coupled to the feed rollers 1 and generates a voltage dependent on the speed of the rollers 1. With the reel 2 and rollers 1 stationary, and the motor 5 driving the pole wheel, the potentiometer 9 is adjusted so that the web is under the required tension. When the rollers 1 are started up, the tachometer 12 generates a voltage which causes variation of the current in the coil 4 so that the web tension remains constant as the web speed increases up to its normal value. During subsequent normal running, the voltage generated by the tachometer 12 remains constant. To effect the required adjustment of the coil current as the reel diameter decreases and its shaft speed increases during unwinding, the shaft of the reel 2 is coupled to a tachometer 19 generating a voltage corresponding to the shaft speed. The tachometer 19 is connected to resistances 17, 18 connected to the resistances 10, 11 in such manner that the differential voltage across the two pairs of resistances is applied to the potentiometer 9 to effect the required variation of the coil current. Series-connected mechanically-coupled potentiometers 7, 8 are also in the circuit between the potentiometer 9 and the amplifier 6. The potentiometers 7, 8 are connected, during acceleration or deceleration of the web, by switches 14, 15 respectively to a source of potential so that the coil current is varied to compensate for the acceleration and deceleration forces at the reel shaft. The switches 14, 15 are controlled by acceleration or deceleraton sensitive devices. In a simplified construction, the tachometer 19 and resistances 17, 18 are omitted so that the current in the coil 4 remains constant once the web has reached normal speed. In this arrangement the hyperbolic speed-torque characteristic of the brake causes an approximate adjustment of the brake torque as the reel decreases in diameter, to maintain the web tension substantially constant.
