Abstract

1,215,703. Automatic control of tension. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. Dec.15, 1967 [Jan.18, 1967], No.59064/67. Heading G3R. [Also in Division D1] A sheet of. yarns W is fed by a roller DRD (driven at constant speed by a motor MO) to a take-up roller B driven by a motor MOB whose speed is controlled to keep the tension in the yarns constant as the windings build up in diameter. The tension is sensed by leading the yarns from the roller DRD to a roller 39, then back to a roller 45, before winding on the roller B. The rollers 39, 45 are held apart by springs, so that they move closer together as the tension increases and thereby operate a transducer to give an electrical signal dependent on the tension. Control circuit. The motors MO and MOB are supplied with direct current from 3-phase mains by a regulated Thyristor Power Supply; the motor MOB also has its armature supplied by a 24v Thyristor Boost rectifier delivering power across a resistor R3, and has its field supplied by a Current Regulator responding to the transducer and to a Loss Compensation unit. The boost is controlled by a capacitor I.C. and diode D2 to limit the acceleration when the yarn speed is changed manually by means of the Line Speed Adjustment; it is also controlled by alternative resistors P2, P3, which provide normal running and creep speed used when setting up the machine. The loss compensation varies as the cube of the speed to account for air resistance to rotation of the armature.
