946,726. Automatic tension control. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA A.B. May 2, 1962 [May 4, 1961], No. 16810/62. Heading G3R. In an automatic control system for maintaining constant the tension in a moving web, the roller for winding or unwinding the web is contacted at its periphery by a driving member driven by a motor controlled by a signal which is dependent both on web speed and on variations in web tension. As shown, a printing press 11 is fed with a paper web 12 which is wound or unwound on a roller 19 contacted by a driving belt 18 driven by a motor 17. There is provided a conventional tension-sensing arrangement, comprising jockey pulleys 20, 21, 22, a pivoted lever 23 biased by a spring 24 for setting the tension, a potentiometer 25 and a tacho-generator 26 driven by a gear 27, and a resistor 38 whereby variations in web tension produce a signal which is fed over an amplifier 28, e.g. a transductor, to the field circuit 29 of a generator 30 which is driven by a motor 31 and which is connected to the armature circuit of motor 17. A roller (not shown) in the printing press 11 contacts the moving web 12 and is mechanically coupled to a D.C. generator 13, having constant excitation, the output voltage of which is proportional to the web speed; this output voltage is also applied to the armature circuit of motor 17 which is thus controlled by a resultant signal dependent both upon web-speed and variations in web tension, so that the speed of roller 19 is varied in a sense to maintain the tension in the web constant. The generator 30 may be the generator of a Ward Leonard set (Fig. 2, not shown), or may be replaced by a controlled rectifier.
