In an automatic control system for maintaining constant the tension in a strip-formed material being delivered from a machine and wound on a reel, a motor driving the reel is fed from a direct-current generator driven from the machine, or from a motor driving the machine. A field of the generator is energized from a potentiometer having a sliding contact actuated by a dancing-roller responsive to the tension in the strip.
