920,386. Automatic thickness control systems. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. May 4, 1961 [June 9, 1960], No. 16206/61. Class 38 (4). [Also in Group XXII] The thickness of foil in a rolling mill is automatically adjusted to a predetermined value by a signal produced by a variation in the foil thickness, the tension of the foil and the speed of the rolls being altered. The signal, produced by an X-ray gauge 32 when the foil thickness differs from a value set by a handle 34, is fed through a preamplifier 36, a quickresponse proportional control device 40 and limiter circuit 48 to a tension regulator 50, which varies the speed of a motor 52 driving an unwind reel 12. The same signal passes a slow response integrating control device 38, limiter circuit 42, and voltage regulator 44 to adjust the speed of a motor 46 and hence rolls 16, 14.
