Abstract

864,419. Automatic tension control systems. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. March 24, 1959 [March 24, 1958], No. 9325/58. Class 38 (4). In a web-feeding arrangement, the sag in a catenary is maintained constant by controlling the tension in the web in dependence on the weight per unit length of web and the force required to produce the tension in the web. As shown, a metal strip 1 passing through a sequence of pickling baths 2-4 hangs in a series of catenaries over guide rollers 5-10. A free loop of constant sag is maintained between guide rollers 9, 10 and further guide rollers 12, 13 by a system responsive to photo-cell arrangement 14. Rollers 9, 10 are driven by a motor having constant field excitation, the armature 15 being supplied from an armature 17 of a Ward-Leonard generator so that the voltage across a resistor 19, in series with the armature 15, is representative of the torque of rolls 9, 10. The force acting on a roller 8 due to the weight of the web is sensed by a transducer 18, the output voltage of which is applied to a magnetic amplifier 20 in opposition to the voltage across the resistor 19. The magnetic amplifier 20 controls a field 21 of a series booster 22 to vary the current to an armature 16 of motor driving rollers 5, 6 so as to maintain the sag in the catenaries constant.
