Abstract

671,080. Control of D.C. motors. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Nov. 17, 1950. [Nov. 18, 1949] No. 29613/49. Class 38 (iii). [Also in Group XXXV] In a D.C. rolling mill motor, normally arranged to run at a constant speed but compounded so that its speed varies to a small extent with the load, the compounding is made adjustable to meet various load requirements. The motor armature is supplied from a Ward- Leonard generator 4, the field 4a of which is in series with an amplifying exciter 6 across busbars 7 supplied from an exciter 8. The control winding 6a of the amplifying exciter 6 is connected in series with an anti-hunt winding 4b on the generator, a resistor 10, and a tachogenerator 11 (driven by the motor) across the busbars 7. Deviation of the speed of the motor from a value predetermined by the voltage at the busbars 7 varies the resultant voltage applied to the control winding 6a to correct the deviation. A voltage proportional to motor current is tapped off resistor 13 and applied to a potentiometer 14 in turn supplying a magnetic amplifier 15 which applies this current component to resistor 10. The tapping on resistor 13 is gauged to field regulator 9 so that 'the proportion of the voltage tapped off is automatically increased as the regulator 9 is moved in the direction to increase the motor speed. Potentiometer 14 is manually adjustable. In a modification, the field winding of the motor (instead of the generator) is connected in series with the exciter 6 across the bus-bars 7.
