738,662. Automatic speed control systems; exciting dynamos. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. Oct. 5, 1953 [Oct. 30, 1952], No. 27306/52. Classes 35 and 38 (4). [Also in Group XXXVII] In a Ward-Leonard control system in which the excitation of the generator G is controlled by a magnetic amplifier MA in accordance with the difference between the armature voltage of the motor M and a reference voltage tapped off a potentiometer R1, and an auxiliary field F2 opposes the main generator field in order to cancel the small field remaining when the magnetic amplifier is delivering its minimum output; the auxiliary field is controlled by a potentiometer R2, ganged with the speed reference potentiometer R1 so that the opposing field is reduced as the output of the magnetic amplifier is increased. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the auxiliary field is of reversible polarity and serves to boost the main field at full output.
