Abstract

833,637. Automatic voltage-control systems. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Nov. 9, 1956 [Nov. 11, 1955], No. 32294/55. Class 38 (4). In an automatic voltage-control system for a separately-excited engine-driven aircraft alternator, the excitation is increased above normal full-load value if the alternator voltage drops due to overload. The exciter E has a selfexcited field Ef 1 , Ef 2 capable of producing a larger output than the normal full-load requirement of the alternator. The field Ef 1 , Ef 2 is divided into two parts and arranged at opposite sides of a bridge with resistors R1, R2 to voltage opposing the self-excitation is normally applied across one diagonal of the bridge by a magnetic amplifier MA2 so as to reduce the excitation to that required to maintain the alternator output voltage constant at the desired value. The alternator voltage is compared with a reference voltage CV to control a magnetic amplifier MA1 which in turn controls the amplifier MA2. An additional field winding Ef 3 aids the self-excitation and prevents polarity reversal which might otherwise occur if the output of amplifier MA2 were excessive.
