The output voltage of the generator of a D.C. motor-generator set supplied from a fluctuating D.C. traction supply is maintained constant by a vibrating contact regulator which can either shunt the field of the generator (when the set is running fast from a high input voltage and on low load) or the field of the motor (when the opposite conditions prevail). The motor field m and the generator field g are connected in series across the output of the generator G. A vibrating contact C responsive to the generator output voltage operates under conditions of light load and high input voltage to intermittently connect shunt rg across the generator field g, thereby reducing the generator field and increasing the motor field. Under conditions of heavy load and low input voltage, contact C intermittently connects shunt rm across the motor field m. The motor is stated to include an auxiliary series field, and the generator has an unregulated shunt field g<SP>1</SP>. The proportioning of the various field windings is discussed.
