Abstract

544,925. Transmitting mechanical power by electromagnetic clutches ; automatic control systems for winding reels. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and CARNEGIE, H. S. Oct. 29, 1940, No. 15831. [Classes 35 and 38 (iv)] Tension in winding strip and like material 1 on a reel 3 is maintained substantially constant as the diameter of the reel increases by driving the reel through a magnetic slip coupling 4 comprising a field system 4a rotating relatively to a secondary system 4b, having a polyphase winding of the squirrel cage type with incorporated high resistance, or of the slip-ring type with external high resistance the coupling having a drooping speed-torque characteristic approximating to a hyperbola over the working range thus being obtained by suitable relationship between no load speed, excitation and secondary resistance. One member may be geared to a mill and the other geared to the reel, or a separate motor may drive the coupling. A jockey roller over which the material passes may adjust the excitation or secondary resistance, or both, in accordance with any change in tension. The secondary circuit resistance may vary in accordance with reel speed. To eliminate the reaction of the secondary current on the primary flux a bucking exciter 9 may be included in the field circuit and driven at the speed of the secondary inducter ; the excitation may be increased with slip by a de-compounding winding 9b fed from the secondary circuit through current transformers and rectifiers. An over-compounded independently driven exciter may be used alternatively. A voltmeter 15 indicating strip tension may be connected across a dynamo 14 driven by the secondary element of the coupling or the reel and excited by direct current similarly derived from the secondary circuit, its calibration being adjusted by a potentiometer 17 according to strip speed. Specification 544,941 is referred to.
