Abstract

698,064. Exciting dynamo-electric machines. MBTROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Oct. 11, 1951 [Oct. 18, 1950], No. 23730/61. Class 35. [Also in Group XXXVII] A motor 2 drives a reversible rolling mill and is supplied from a generator 1 having a fullycompensated amplidyne exciter 3, a control winding 4 of which is energized from a constant source 26 through a reverser 24, a speed-setting rheostat 21, and a resistor 23 which reduces the time-constant of the circuit of the control winding. An exciter field winding 5 opposes the winding 4 and is connected across the armature of the generator 1 so that the voltage of the generator is substantially independent of the speed at which it is driven. A winding 7 is wound on the poles of the main generator so as to be energized in accordance with the rate-ofchange of generator flux and voltage, the exciter having a field winding 8 connected to the winding 7 and operating to restrict the acceleration of the motor. An excessive rate-of-change of motor armature current is prevented by means of a transformer secondary winding 11 which is connected to both a field winding 14 of the exciter 3 and the brushes 12, 13. The transformer may be replaced by an inductive shunt, or it may have two secondary windings feeding the winding 14 and the brushes 12, 13, separately. A motor field winding 16 is supplied from the source 26 through an undercompensated amplidyne 17 which opposes the voltage of the source and provides a rapid change of motor field excitation. Opposing amplidyne field windings 18, 19 are energized from the source .26, the winding 18 being controlled by a rheostat 22 which is interlocked with rheostat 21. A too rapid response of the amplidyne 17 is prevented by means of winding 27 which is connected to winding 28 linking the cross-flux of the machine. Rectifiers 29 are provided for more sensitive operation.
