Abstract

698,065. Exciting dynamo-electric machines. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Nov. 16, 1951 [Nov. 30, 1950], No. 26953/51. Class 35. [Also in Group XXXVII] Relates to arrangements for protecting direct. current dynamo-electric machines against the production of excessive armature currents as a result of rapid change of excitation by regulating means for the machines. As shown, a Ward-Leonard motor 2 has its field winding 16 supplied from a constant source 26 through a bucking cross-flux exciter 17. The control field winding 18 of the exciter is regulated by rheostat 22 and co-operates with a winding 19 which just counter-balances the sub-neutralization of the exciter when the necessary excitation current is flowing in the winding 16. In order to limit the speed of response of the machine 17 a transformer winding 28 is connected to winding 27 which opposes the change of control ampere-turns. A magnetic amplifier has coils 30, 31 connected to a centre-tapped transformer secondary winding and to the terminals of a resistor 25 which is in the circuit of the control winding 18. Rectifiers 32, 33 are arranged so that the output of the magnetic amplifier opposes the source 26. The amplifier has saturation winding 34 supplied through rectifier 36 in accordance with the motor armature current, and an opposing saturation winding 35 is energized in proportion to the field current of the motor. When rheostat 22 is adjusted to reduce the field excitation of the motor and an excessive armature current is caused thereby, the winding 34 overcomes the winding 35 and the magnetic amplifier produces a voltage across resistor 25 which reduces the extent of field-weakening. The value of armature current at which this operation takes place increases with an increasing prevailing excitation of the motor since the energization of the winding 35 increases with the motor field excitation. Specification 698,064 is referred to.
