Class 38(4) In a retroactive automatic control system for a dynamo-electric machine, a D.C. control voltage is derived from an A.C. scurce through a rectifier which is provided with a high impedance dummy load so that current may flow in either direction in the external circuit. In Fig. 1 an A.C. commutator motor 1 has its stator fed directly from three-phase supply mains and its rotor fed from the same mains through an induction regulator 2. An A.C. voltage is produced representative of motor speed by combining the motor armature voltage K with a fixed voltage from a mains transformer 14 and a voltage dependent on motor load from a current transformer 12 associated with the input to the motor stator. This voltage is applied to a bridge rectifier 10 connected in opposition to a bridge rectifier 8 supplied through an adjustable ratio transformer 7 from a mains transformer 6, the resultant voltage being applied to a field winding 3f of a reversible servomotor 3 adjusting induction regulator 2. Resistances 9 and 11 in parallel with rectifiers 8. 10 facilitate reversal of current in field winding 3f. The armature 3a of servomotor 3 is supplied with substantially constant current through a current transformer 4 and rectifier 5 from the armature circuit of motor 1. Servomotor 3 thus automatically maintains the speed of motor 1 at a value determined by the setting of transformer 7. The following features are introduced in modifications:- (a) Association of variable ratio transformer 7 with transformer 14 instead of transformer 6. (b) Derivation of a voltage representative of speed from a tachometer generator driven by motor 1. The field of this generator is energized through a rectifier from the mains. (c) Supplying the armature of the servomotor through a condenser and rectifier from the mains. (d) Controlling the supply to the armature of the servomotor instead of its field. (e) Controlling the servomotor through a magnetic amplifier. (f) Derivation of a voltage representative of motor horsepower, to maintain the latter constant, by energizing the field of the tachometer generator at (b) above from transformer 12. (g) Adjusting a resistance 13 across transformer 12 simultaneously with transformer 7.
