670,856. Control of A.C. and D.C. motors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., SHARP. H., and PETCH, T. H. Nov. 16, 1950. [May 25. 1950] No. 13215/50. Class 38 (iii). An induction motor IM is mechanically coupled to a, direct-current motor DCM which is supplied from a Ward-Leonard generator G. Braking of the induction motor is provided by disconnecting it from the alternating-current supply and supplying its primary winding with direct-current from exciter E through contactor C. The braking-effect may be increased by adjusting the excitation of field winding F4 to reduce the generator voltage, thus increasing the current passed from the motor DCM to the generator. This produces a greater excitation of exciter field winding F1 and a heavier direct-current excitation of the .induction motor. Increase of the generator voltage leads to decrease of the braking-effect, and, if the generator voltage is made greater than that of the motor DCM, the latter will exert a driving-torque, a rectifier R1 preventing energization of the field winding F1 under these circumstances. A rectifier R2 by-passes the winding F1 and rectifier R1. The rectifiers may be replaced by contactors and the exciter E by other forms of amplifiers.
