Abstract

835,007. Control of D.C. motors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO. Ltd. Sept. 18, 1956 [Sept. 19, 1955], No. 26747/55. Class 38 (3). A motor 2 is protected against over-speeding by means of a circuit-breaker 4 having a tripcoil 12 which is energized when a relay 16 closes contacts 15. A coil 17 of the relay responds to the voltage of an exciter 6 for the motor, whilst a second relay-coil 18 is energized by a motordriven tachometer generator 19. A bridgetype rectifier 20 ensures that the energization of coil 18 is the same for either direction of rotation of the motor, and is in a correct sense to combine with the energization provided by coil 17 when the exciter is operating to reduce the motor-field. The protection afforded thus anticipates conditions in which over-speeding is likely to occur and guards against such overspeeding. The exciter 6 has a field winding 7 for determining the excitation of the motor, and an opposing field winding 9 which is energized from magnetic amplifier 10. A control winding of the amplifier is excited in accordance with the output current of the machine 6. The motor may be supplied from a Ward-Leonard generator 1.
