[Class 38 (iii)] In a Ward-Leonard system employing an idle running machine D in shunt with the generator field winding Fg, acceleration and retardation curves b, v are shaped as in Fig. 2 by coupling a regulating machine R to the machine D and feeding it with a voltage proportional to the speed of the controlled motor Am. The field winding Fr and an auxiliary " self-excited field Fd1 of the machine D are fed through rectifiers from the same voltage.
