Abstract

774,423. Exciting dynamo-electric machines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Oct. 11, 1955 [Oct. 11, 1954], No. 29256/54. Addition to 677,247. Class 35. [Also in Group XXXVII] A D.C. supply system comprises a main generator 10 having the field winding 12 fed from an exciter 13 whose excitation current is arranged to depend upon the main generator output power and current and upon a reference electrical quantity. The exciter 13 has a first field winding (not shown) which is supplied with direct current at variable value for the speed control of the motor 11, and a second winding 1 energized through a metal rectifier 2 in dependence upon the power and current output of the generator 10. The rectifier 2 is such that no current passes until a predetermined voltage is reached when a current flows in the winding 1 tending to reduce the excitation of the generator 10 and therefore limiting the output current. In order to energize the winding 1 in dependence upon the power output of the generator 10, an exciter 3 is provided and driven by the motor 11 and, therefore, runs at a speed proportional to the voltage of the generator 10. The field winding 15 of the exciter 3 is supplied from across the generator interpole 14 and therefore in proportion to the generator current; hence output power of the exciter 3 is proportional to the output power of the generator 10. Rectifiers 4, 5 are arranged to enable the current and power supplies to the winding 1, while rectifiers 6, 7, 8 deal with regenerative conditions when current in the generator 10 and motor 11 circuit reverses. If the motor 11. is required to run at various speeds by control of its field, then a separate motor supplied from the generator 10 is arranged to drive the exciter 3. Instead of using a single winding 1 of the exciter 13 to provide both for current and power limit control of the generator 10, two separate field windings may be provided on this exciter in addition to the winding whose current depends upon the reference electrical quantity.
