A compole winding 5 is fed from rectified A.C. controlled in accordance with the load current of its machine 1 by means of a saturable reactor 13, and controlled in steps in accordance with the machine speed by means of speedresponsive contactors 15, 17 which serve to increase its excitation as the speed rises.
