Controlled rectifiers 7 to 12 supply direct current in one direction or the other to a load from the secondary windings of a polyphase current transformer which is constructed with a phase winding on each leg of its core. The load may be the field winding of a synchronous machine, in which case the circuit provides rapid and precise control especially in a compounded excitation arrangement where rapid demagnetization can be obtained.
