[Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVII] The invention relates to control systems for sectionalized machines such as paper making machines, in which each section is driven by a separate motor, means including a potentiometer connected across a constant voltage supply being provided to vary the speed of all the motors proportionately, together with means including a potentiometer associated with a tachometer generator driven by each motor to vary the speed of any individual motor. The invention consists in providing an additional potentiometer and reference voltage line, so that an individual motor may be run temporarily at a relatively different speed. Fig. 2 shows one section of a paper making machine in which the armature current of section motor 1 is supplied from a generator 2, the field of which is modified by amplifier 5 according to the difference between a constant voltage and that from tachometer-generator 7 driven by motor 1, so that the speed of the motor is maintained constant. The constant voltage is supplied from source 11 over lines 8 and 9, and corresponding elements for the other sections (not shown) are similarly connected to lines 8 and 9. Potentiometer 10 across source 11, provides means for simultaneously varying the speeds of all the section motors proportionally, the relative speed of any motor being adjustable by means of potentiometer 12 connected across the section tachometer-generator. To provide means for temporarily varying the relative speed of one of the motors so that it may run at a creeping speed, a third line 13 is connected to potentiometer 10 so that the ratio of the voltage between lines 8 and 13 to that between lines 8 and 9, is the same as that of the desired creeping speed to the normal running speed. The tachometer generator of each section is then connected to the slider of potentiometer 14 across lines 9 and 13, and by moving the slider to the point connected to line 13, the desired creeping speed may be introduced.
