Speed maintaining systems. - A number of electric motors driving separate units of paper - making and like machines are kept in a predetermined speed relation by interconnections between tappings of the armatures, and are individually variable in speed by rotation of the field frames. Fig. 2 shows the preferred arrangement. Main motors 31, 32, 33 driving machine units 10, 11, 12 are geared to auxiliary motors 36, 37, 38 having their armatures tapped, each at three points, and connected to a common equalizing circuit 39. The field frames of the auxiliary motors are worm - geared to addition motors 40, 41, 42 which are run at any required speed, by means of controlling switches and field rheostats, so as to increase or decrease the speed of any auxiliary and therefore of any main motor without affecting the other machines. In a modification the auxiliary motors are dispensed with, and the speed controlling means are applied to the main motors.
