Abstract
681,732. Control of D.C. motors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and HUGGARD, J. P. Feb. 7, 1951 [Feb. 7, 1950J, No. 3187/50. Class 38 (iii) [Also in Group XXXV] A ship propulsion system comprises direct-current motors M<SP>1</SP>, M<SP>2</SP>, which are supplied from generators G<SP>1</SP>, G<SP>2</SP>, G<SP>3</SP>, having field windings FG<SP>1</SP>, FG<SP>2</SP>, FG<SP>3</SP>. The generators are excited by a machine, EG , having a field winding EGF<SP>1</SP> which is energised in accordance with the motor armature current and which opposes reference field windings EGF<SP>2</SP>, EGF<SP>3</SP>. The reference field winding EGF<SP>3</SP> is connected through an adjustabe resistor to a constant direct voltage source. The motor field windings FM<SP>1</SP>, FM<SP>2</SP>, are connected through separate reversing contactors and adjustable resistors to a constant voltage supply, and; the reference field winding EGF<SP>2</SP> is connected through rectifiers Xl, X', so that its energisation is determined by the setting of resistor C<SP>1</SP> or C<SP>2</SP>, whichever is adjusted to provide the higher excitation of its associated motor field winding. The arrangement is therefore such that, when both the motors are operated at low speed, the current supplied to the armatures of the motors is reduced. In a modification each motor has a separate exciter and the winding EGF<SP>2</SP> is connected through rectifiers to the field windings of these exciters, Fig. 2 (not shown).
