Abstract

670,046. Control of A.C. motors. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Sept. 13, 1950. [July 22, 1949] No. 19369/49. Class 38 (iii). A single phase series commutator motor which may be used for driving a locomotive is started from a D.C. supply, and, at some stage during acceleration, is changed over to an A.C. source of supply. In Fig. 1, a master controller is moved initially to increase, gradually the excitation of a generator G so steadily increasing the direct voltage applied to motors M1, M2. Further movement of the controller causes progressive reduction of the generator voltage and simultaneous increase of the alternating voltage applied to the motors through tappings of transformer 12, the generator being shortcircuited when its voltage is reduced to zero: Rheostatic braking is effected by connecting motor field windings M1f, M2f, to the generator G and placing resistor 29 across the motor armatures: The change-over from D.C. to A.C. energization of the motors may be. made by automatic speed-responsive means. In multimotor units, all the motors are started together on D.C. and, at some stage during acceleration, each motor is in turn changed over to the A.C. supply by reducing the direct voltage and at the same time increasing the alternating voltage from zero to maximum. , The Provisional'Specification refers to D.C. energization of the motors through a rectifier.
