Abstract

494,357. Control of D.C. motors. TUSTIN, A. May 31, 1937, No. 15015. [Class 38 (iii)] Varying E.M.F.; field control.-One or more traction motors 6, 7 are supplied from a generator 1 driven by a motor 3 energized from a supply 4 for the vehicle, and the motors have fields 10, 11 energized in accordance with the difference between the voltage of a variable voltage exciter 15 for the generator and another voltage of fixed or substantially fixed value, so that during acceleration the excitation of the motors is decreased simultaneously with increase of the generator excitation and voltage. The fields 10, 11 may be connected in series with the exciter 15 across an auxiliary generator 12 which supplies auxiliary apparatus on the vehicle with constant voltage. The motors 6, 7 may have series fields 8, 9 additional to the fields 10, 11, and reversing switches 21, 22, 23 for the motor fields are provided. The field 17 of the generator exciter 15 is supplied and controlled from a potentiometer 18 connected across the generator 12. The generator 12 may have a voltage regulator 14 whereby its voltage is maintained constant, but it is sufficient if the voltage of the generator 12 has a voltage which varies less than the voltage of the exciter 15.
