Abstract

555,069. Control of D.C. motors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 30, 1942, No. 1274. Convention date, Jan. 31, 1941. [Class 38 (iii)] During dynamic braking of a vehicle, motors 10, 11 are connected in a loop with braking resistors 71, 72, and their fields 12, 13 are connected in series with an axle-driven exciter 35 across the resistor 72. The excitor is regulated for constant voltage by a vibrating regulator 41, and opposes the back voltage of the motors. As the back voltage of the motors declines, their field excitation increases and so the braking effort remains substantially constant. During motoring, controller 18 is used, line-breaker LB is picked up and series-parallel transition is given by notches 19-28, 29. The regulator 41 maintains a constant low voltage at the brushes of the exciter so that it will build up quickly when braking is required. During braking, pedal 43 is used, braking contactors B1, B2 are picked up and setting of regulator 41 is changed by removing a short circuit about resistor 48, so that exciter 35 is regulated for full voltage.
