Scents for continuous-current motors; control by regulating field.-In controlling motors according to the Ward-Leonard system, the generator is separately excited by a machine of substantially constant voltage, and the motor field is excited by the generator and the excited machine in series. Variations of speed are obtained by varying resistance in the fields of the generator and motor simultaneously and in opposite senses. One arrangement is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. A motor 10 is supplied by a generator 11, the generator field 13 being excited by a separate constant voltage machine 14, and the motor field 12 being excited by the machine 11 and 14 in series. Resistances R<1>, R<2> connected to the generator field and R<3>, R<4> connected to the motor field are grouped into one instrument so that by rotating a double contact-arm 19, Fig. 1, resistance is added to the generator field and simultaneously subtracted from the motor field or vice versa. The continued movement of the contact-arm on passing off a stud 23 transfers the motor excitation to the generator alone, without breaking the field circuit.
