Abstract
542,604. Automatic control systems for wire drawing and like machines. TOWLE, E. L. N., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. May 29, 1940, No. 9434. [Class 38 (iv)] Tension or the amount of slack in wire drawing machines which is determined by the relative speed of motors driving various stages in the machine is controlled by a jockey pulley adapted to vary the action of a vibrating regulator controlling one of the motors. The position of one contact of a cam operated vibrating regulator 13 is determined by a cam 19 rotated by the movements of a pulley 6 caused by changes in the amount of slack in the wire passing over it between stages. A relay 30 normally short circuiting field resistance 12 is energized at each closure of contacts 13, the percentage duration of which is determined by the position of the pulley 6, so that the average excitation of the driving motor 7 changes with the position of the pulley to correct the motor speed. To control the speed of the machine as a whole from any stage the motor driving that stage is arranged as the motor 8 with a rheostat 10a in its field circuit to which rheostats 9a in the field circuits of each of the automatically controlled motors may be mechanically coupled.
