Abstract

556,501. Automatic control systems for D.C. generators. STACKPOLE CARBON CO. June 2, 1942, No. 7486. Convention date, June 21, 1941. [Class 38 (iv)] Voltage, current.-The output of a dynamo 13 is regulated by a motor 1 the armature of which is in series with the field winding 16 of the dynamo, its own winding being connected across the dynamo output leads. The motor is held stationary by braking until the dynamo output reaches a value at which a solenoid, in shunt or in series with the output leads, reduces the braking. This solenoid then varies the braking so that the back e.m.f. of the motor regulates the dynamo field as required to maintain the output constant. When the output tends to exceed a limiting value the solenoid lifts a brush 7 on the motor commutator to interrupt the dynamo field circuit and prevent further rise in output. As shown in Fig. 2 a spring 9 adjustably presses a brush 7 on the motor commutator to determine the output required to start the motor, and the solenoid 21 through a back coupling progressively relieves the brush tension and eventually lifts the brush. In a modification a shunt connected solenoid regulating output voltage operates upon a brake block on a drum coupled to the motor spindle, a blade spring pressing on the block being extended to engage brush-lifting means. A series connected solenoid lifts another brush to limit output current.
