Abstract

229,410. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., and Jewitt, D. E. Nov. 27, 1923. Driving arrangements for screw propellers.-In an electric propulsion system where a number of prime movers each drive a direct-current generator and the generators are connected in series to supply current to one or more propeller motors, the excitation of each generator is reduced automatically in accordance with a reduction in speed of the corresponding prime mover. A governor on the engine may control for this purpose a booster associated with each generator field or the field of the generator field exciter. The generators 1, driven by engines 2, are connected in series with a propeller motor 3. The fields of the motors 1 are connected in series with boosters 4, the fields of which are controlled by switches 5 actuated by governors on the engines. In a modification, the generator field is connected across a rheostat interposed between it and the booster. The booster may be wound so as to be normally open circuited in which case the switch closes the field and arranged to buck the normal excitation. The booster may have two windings, the switch operating to change from the boosting to the bucking voltage control. Specification 202,117, [Class 38 (iii), Electric motor control systems &c.], is referred to.
