Abstract
345,470. Motor power plant. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and JAKEMAN, R. G., of General Electric Co., Witton, Birmingham. March 6, 1930, No. 7407. [Class 110 (iii).] Power plant for ships comprises a prime mover such as a reciprocating engine 1 adapted to exhaust into a second prime mover such as a turbine 2 and an electric motor 3 adapted to receive power from a generator 4 driven by the turbine 2 the motor 3 being on the shaft of the prime mover 1 which drives the propeller 6, and in such plant means is provided to carry a current equal or proportional to that flowing between the generator and the motor and adapted upon variation of this current to effect a voltage regulation of the generator. It is intended that the plant should be controlled by the main step valve to the engine 1 and that the steam supply of the exhaust engine is not controlled. The motor 3 has a field winding 9 provided with a reversing switch 10 and the generator 4 has a field winding 11 and a commutator pole winding 12 connected in series with the main conductor 8. The exciter 5 has a field winding 13 connected in shunt through a regulating rheostat 14 and a field winding 15 connected in shunt across the commutator pole winding 12. Normally when power is flowing from the generator 4 to the motor 3 the winding 15 is adapted to exert a de-compounding effect on the exciter 5. The winding 9 of the motor 3 and the winding 11 of the generator 4 are connected in parallel across the armature of the exciter 5. If electrically driven fans are used for ventilating the generator or motor the driving fans are supplied with current from the exciter so that the speed of the fans varies in accordance with that voltage.
