Abstract

369,203. Ships' power plant. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and JAKEMAN, R. G., of General Electric Co., Witton, Birmingham. Dec. 3, 1930, No. 36526. [Class 114.] A power plant for ship propulsion comprises a prime mover adapted to drive the propeller non-electrically and an electric motor on the propeller shaft driven by a constant current supplied from a generator driven by an auxiliary prime mover. The main steam or Diesel engine 1 drives the propeller 2, on the shaft 3 of which is an electric motor 5, 6. This motor receives current from the generator 10 driven by a auxiliary steam turbine or Diesel engine 9. The speed of the engine 1 is controlled by the hand-lever 32 but the direction of rotation is controlled by the hand-wheel 36. When the switch 38 contacts with the terminals 42, 43, this wheel also controls the direction of running of the motor 5, 6, through the drum switch 47 .. 56, which reverses the field winding 7, 8, the reverse gear 67 being revolved by the motor 99. With the switch 38 open the wheel 36 controls the engine 1 only and when the switch contacts with the terminals 44, 45, the direction of the motor 5, 6 is controlled only by the hand-wheel 37 acting on the drum switch 57 .. 66. The speed of the engine 9 is controlled by the lever 34 and the field current of the generator 10 by the hand-lever 115. The balancing relay 110 has two opposing coils, 112, 113, the first of which is energized by a small generator 120 driven by the propeller shaft and hence carries a current proportional to the propeller speed. The second coil 113 is in series with resistances controlled by the handles 32, 115 and is across the bus-bars 16, 17, and hence carries a current varied by the position of the speed and current controls of the engines 1, 9. Should the propeller speed exceed a predetermined maximum the contact 111 is opened, the field coil of the generator 10 is de-energized, thus removing the power supply to the motor 5, 6 and decreasing the propeller speed.
