Abstract

329,040. Johnson, E. M., Young, A., and Associated Electrical Industries, Ltd. Feb. 16, 1929. Dynamos and motors combined for transmitting power.-In power plant wherein a reversible reciprocating engine operates a main drive and a second prime mover operating from the exhaust of the first prime mover is used to transmit power through an electric transmission system to the main driving shaft, an excitation system is provided wherein the main motor has composite excitation of which one component has reversible series characteristics and another component has shunt or separate excitation characteristics, the first component assisting the latter when power is being supplied to the motor and opposing when the motor tends to supply power to the generator. On ships this may be arranged so as to provide a governing effort to the propeller when the latter is racing. A generator 1 is driven by the exhaust motor and 3 and 4 are exciter generators also driven thereby. The exciter 4 is excited by the main current, and for this purpose a field winding 5 is connected through rheostat 6 across one of the inter pole windings 7 on the main generator 1. The exciter 4 supplies the field winding 8 of the motor 2 for the series excitation thereof. The exciter 3 the field winding 9 and the generator 1 and the shunt field winding 10 of the motor 2. The reversing switch 11 is disposed in the circuit of the field winding 9 and the reversing switch 12 in the circuit of the field winding 8. Fluctuation in power transmitted between the generator 1 and motor 2 may be controlled by adjusting the relative strengths of the two motor field windings 8, 10. Specification 325,269, [Class 110 (iii), Turbines &c.], is referred to.
