Abstract

283,902. Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Kirkpatrick, T. P.). Jan. 19, 1927, [Convention date]. Dynamos and motors combined for transmitting power; systems depending on two or more machines. - A steam turbine 1 drives a main generator 2 connected to a propelling motor 3 which is controlled by the turbine speed and rotor resistance 27. Auxiliary supplies 4, 5 and a synchronous machine 7 are also connected to the main generator through a relay 13 subject to the speed of the turbine 1. The machine 1 runs normally as a motor to correct power factor and to drive an exciter 8 supplying the fields and d.c. auxiliary mains. It is, however, coupled to an auxiliary turbine 6 having governor control 26 adjusted to supply heating steam under normal conditions but to vary the steam admission to maintain a substantially constant speed or frequency in the machine 7. Thus when the main supply frequency falls below a limit the relay 13 opens and the auxiliary 7 takes over the load of the auxiliaries 4, 5. At need the machine 7 may be used to drive the propelling motor 3, either alone or in association with the main generator 2. The compound wound exciter 21 is arranged to maintain substantially constant voltage irrespective of the speed changes of its driving shaft.
