Abstract

Alternating-current commutator machines; exciting.-In a power transmission system for propelling ships by Diesel engines, several engine-driven alternating-current generators 15, 16, 17 are connected in series with a propeller motor 21 of the synchronous or induction type. Each generator is constructed as shown in Fig. 1 with two-phase shunt excitation coils 6 .. 9, series compensating coils 2 .. 5, and two independent single-phase rotor windings respectively connected to two commutators 10, 11. Current for the shunt excitation is furnished by a svnchronous condenser 18 driven by a variable speed direct current motor 19, the variations of frequency thus obtained being used to control the working of the main motor.
