Abstract
158,373. Ayres, W. E. M., and Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd. Nov. 5, 1919. Alternating-current motors; exciting. - In an alternating-current motor which is started as an induction motor and is run as a synchronous motor, the secondary member is provided with a comparatively large number of conductors arranged as a number of similar windings, a starting-resistance being connected to a portion only of the windings or to the windings in parallel at starting, and a source of direct current being connected to the windings in series during synchronous operation. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the rotor is provided with two independent star-connected three-phase windings 10, 11. For starting, the winding 10 is connected across the starting resistance 4, the winding 11 and the exciter 5 being open-circuited. When the motor is nearly up to its synchronous speed, the changeover switch 6 is operated to disconnect the starting-resistance 4 and connect the windings 10, 11 in series with the exciter 5, as shown in Fig. 6. Other arrangements are described in which the rotor is provided with delta-connected two-phase, three-phase and six-phase windings.
