Exciting; dynumos, regulating; motors, controlling.-In the method of operating synchronous machines having three-phase rotor windings by starting them as induction motors and supplying continuous current to two of the rotor phase windings m, n, in series at synchronous speed, the third phase winding o is short-circuited so that it acts as a damping-winding. The machine is provided with one supplementary slip-ring in the case of a star rotor winding and with two slip-rings in the case of a delta rotor winding. In one of the rotor phase winding circuits an ammeter A is provided for determining the most favourable moment for connecting to the source of continuous current.
